Solar Decathlon 2013

I visited the annual Solar Decathlon last weekend with my friend Pete Hebert and his two sons. This is the first time the contest has been held outside of Washington DC.
The Solar Decathlon is a contest between college teams to design homes for sustainable living. They are scored in 10 different categories including energy efficiency, affordability, comfort, amenities and entertainment (each team hosts a dinner party for one or two other teams as part of the contest).

  1. What a fantastic field trip! Are the structures permanent?

    1. No, they are shipped in from all over the country (and a few from around the world - there were entries from Canada, Czech Republic, and Austria). So that is an important design constraint. I believe the houses were required to be between 600 and 1000 sq. ft. You can read more about it at http://www.solardecathlon.gov/
